Labels

Want to know a secret? I’m pretty sure I don’t have any labels in our home… I love how they look in photos, I love creating them for clients but the truth is, I don’t like using labels in my own space. It’s just not my style.

It may not be your style either but I would still encourage using labels (at least temporarily) and here’s why:

The Learning curve

Labels help with the learning curve of a new organization system. It provides you/your family with visuals of where your things now belong, whether in a pantry, a playroom, kitchen, or a garage. After an organizing session, you/your family are going to be building new habits- Likely a bit different from what you are used to. Labels help to remove the frustration of “Where does this go now?” and will help to keep the system sustainable.

Visuals

In pantries and closets, depending on the height and type of storage solution, you may not be able to see in the container or through it. In that case, long-term visual labeling is pretty essential. It prevents you from having to dig through every shoe box to find the black stilettos you need four times a year at the top of the closet.

Style

Gone are the days of plain white stickers- Labels are everywhere and they’re beautiful! I have some suggestions linked below if you’re looking for some fun options.

Labels can be temporary

If you dislike labels in your space, they can be temporary. I will almost always encourage you to use them temporarily for the reasons above. When you see habits solidifying, simply pop/peel off your labels and store them away. If you ever need to make changes or reinforce habits again, you can bring them back out in the future.
