Minimalism

I’ll say it here first- I wasn’t initially the biggest proponent of minimalism in my own home. But as time went on, I’ve grown more and more appreciative of the concept of minimalism in my life.

I have certain products, furniture, sentimental knickknacks, and appliances that make my life a bit harder than it could be. Some of these products take valuable time from me when I would rather be doing something else (Exhibit A: Me whining as I clean our espresso machine every 2 months). But they also bring me a lot of happiness. I’ve realized that these “things” carry responsibilities that I am committed to and willing to follow through on. Minimalism has helped me narrow in on my willingness to take on appliances and products before I purchase them. Am I willing to dedicate the space in my kitchen (bedroom, bathroom, etc) that this is going to take up? Am I willing to commit to the financial and personal time this product requires? And, most importantly, am I making a purchase that I’m going to regret in the future? Is it worth the potential environment damage I may be causing by purchasing it? All of these questions have driven me to be much more intentional with my time, my money, and what I allow to enter my home.

Minimalism has also helped me with my productivity, both at work and at home. By applying the same principles of minimalism to my time, I’ve found freedom in saying “No” when a request isn’t a priority at work or when a social event doesn’t bring me joy. I’ve grown to value my time a bit more, to commit more to my big goals, and it’s continuing to help me grow and live with greater freedom (The whole point)!

So, if you’re looking to minimize- More power to you! If you love your stuff, great! My goal is that everyone walking into their office and home feels the sense of lightness and freedom that minimalism can bring.
